Motown Memorabilia
1964
The beginning of “Tamla Motown”
1964 proved to be a pivotal year for Motown in Britain. Dave Godin, founder of the Tamla Motown Appreciation Society was invited to Detroit by Margaret Phelps - leader of the Hitsville U.S.A. fan club. Godin managed to persuade Berry Gordy Jr. (Motown Owner) that the label had large potential for success in Britain - further convinced by the small group of hardcore and committed members that made up the TMAS. As a result, this record was created for Godin to give out to the Appreciation Society members, about a year before the first UK tour. The later conceived Tamla Motown label derived its name from The Tamla Motown Appreciation Society, thanks to Dave Godin.
